RNFA is an expanded practice course for operating room nurses, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners to provide the perioperative nurse with the advanced knowledge and skills to function at an advanced practice level. Based on the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Core Curriculum, this program is one of only 16 nationwide approved programs that have met specific criteria and are accepted by the CCI (Competency and Credentialing Institute) as acceptable for CRNFA eligibility.
As a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), your nursing role will be expanded and requires independent nursing judgment related to tissue handling, retracting, providing exposure, clamping, ligating, suturing, and providing hemostasis.

Credit
This program offers six semester hours of University credit for students who complete the didactic and 135-hour clinical components (NURS 481 and NURS 491). Three hours (NURS 481) are awarded in the Summer of 2025 and three hours (NURS 491) in the Summer of 2026 after satisfying the 135 clinical hours and course requirements.
Affiliation Agreement
