NCAT Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter: Tau Upsilon

The Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to the advancement of scholarship and the recognition of nontraditional students in higher education. It is the oldest and largest national honor society for nontraditional students, established in 1945-46 to encourage and recognize scholastic achievement and leadership in adult learners. Alpha Sigma Lambda is recognized as the official Honor society for adult learners by the Association of College Honor Societies. The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Tau Upsilon chapter was chartered in 2022.

Membership Criteria for the Tau Upsilon Chapter at NCAT:

• Minimum of 24 credit hours earned at NCAT


• 24 years of age or older


• 3.5 GPA or higher


• Completing a first undergraduate degree


• Be in the top 20% of those students who meet the above qualifications

National Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society

The Certified Clinical Medical Assisting program is designed to prepare students to function as professionals in multiple healthcare settings. Medical assistants with a clinical background perform various clinical tasks including assisting with the administration of medications and with minor procedures, performing an EKG electrocardiogram, obtaining laboratory specimens for testing, educating patients, and other related tasks. This course is designed to prepare students to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) National Board Examination.
 

This course covers the following key areas and topics:

• Clinical responsibilities of the medical office, assisting the physician with patient related care


• Preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine procedures and diagnostic testing


• HIPAA, patient confidentiality, legal aspects of healthcare and regulatory patient care issues


• Recording and taking of vital signs, blood pressure, and other patient care items related to the physician office visit


• Review and administration of medications, allergies and other pharmacology related items


• Laboratory procedures, phlebotomy and the proper techniques required to collect specimens for laboratory analysis


• Cardiology and the proper placement of leads when taking a 12 lead EKG

Note: This class meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays (January 12, 2027 - April 27, 2027 ) and Required Labs (Saturdays, 9am - 4:30 pm: January 23, February 13, March 13, April 3 & April 24). Students will have hours to sit for the CCMA National Board Exam Only.

Note: This class meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays (January 19, 2027-April 6, 2027 plus 3 required clinical Saturdays, February 6, March 20 & April 3, 9 am - 3 pm)
